Our Favorite Local Eateries

A running joke among locals in Downtown Suffolk is the city’s marketing tagline from years ago, “Surprising Suffolk” - that is as true a description today as it was years ago. Even after 27 years of living in Downtown Suffolk, I am continually and pleasantly surprised by the quality of restaurants appearing on the downtown scene.

Food itself is tied directly to the identity and culture of a geographic area. Everyone knows that Key Lime Pie is better in the Florida Keys and Peach Cobbler is best in Georgia. As a visitor, I think you’ve missed a whole cultural experience if you don’t partake in the hard-work and creativity Suffolk’s chefs put into their dishes.

The best of the restaurants we have to offer in Suffolk have weathered months of lockdown and come out the other side stronger, more nimble and with a deepened commitment to hospitality. For that, I think it is more important than ever to devote our patronage to local establishments and direct my guests to the finest and freshest foods around.

Here’s a brief list of my all-time favorite local eateries in Suffolk.

Harper’s Table

Harper’s Table serves locally sourced Southern cuisine just walking distance of The Pinner House. What we love about Harper is attention to detail that is prevalent in the incredible dishes and the intimate and timeless ambiance he has curated in his establishment. In addition, we LOVE working with Harper as a private chef catering our own events hosted here at The Pinner House. Just as we believe in telling your story through event design and hospitality at The Pinner House, so does Harper Bradshaw root his passion in story.-telling and honoring local traditions through food and gathering at the table.

Sushi AKA

Sushi Aka is one of our favorite local spots for many reasons. You will be absolutely blown away by quality of authentic sushi Chef Mike prepares. Every vegetable is grown and harvested right here in Suffolk and the fish source globally for the freshest seafood. Chef Mike has honed his craft of traditional sushi preparation for years under the influence of renowned experts. You’ll find unique and exotic dishes here that is unparalleled to any other Asian restaurant in Hampton Roads.

The

General Public

All of our favorite restaurants so far have locally sourced food featured on their menu crafted with care, including The General Public. This establishment is also just a short walk from The Pinner House, located right next to our local brewery, Nansemond Station. Serving a casual, hearty and rustic menu, Chef General Lewis’ cuisine is inspired by his love for cooking at home with his mother and backed by 21 years of experience. With exceptionally friendly and attentive staff, you’'ll have nothing short of an amazing dining experience at GP. In addition to The General’s local eatery, they offer catering services that are to-die-for, that you’ll see regularly featured at Signature Pinner House Events.

Amici’s Pizza Cafe

Let me tell you- you literally can never go wrong with Amici’s Cafe. Conveniently located on Washington Street and with ample parking, you’ll find creatively delicious topping combinations on their New York style brick oven pizzas, amazing pastas and even a weekend brunch. Amici’s is a flagship establishment for Downtown Suffolk eateries, having been in operation for over 10 years. You’ll feel right at home with a casual, warm and welcoming vibe. I love their patio seating enclosure and the feature exposed brick wall extending the length of the restaurant.

The Mod Olive is the new kid on the block of our Downtown restaurant scene, but you’ll find it reminiscent of it’s sister-eatery, The Plaid Turnip whom we love as well. The Mod Olive has a quirky vintage style and an endearingly eclectic menu. Owner, Ed Beardsley does it again by serving up a delicious, creative and seemingly endless menu in Suffolk.

Adventure Awaits In Suffolk

After every long winter, the mere mention of spring has us thinking about an energetic shift in our environment and in ourselves: fresh starts, warmer weather, and the anticipation of enjoying the outdoor activities we’ve been missing for months.

I’ve found that fresh air, exercise and good company is just what I need to shake off the winter blues. Fortunately, Suffolk and surrounding areas have no lack of outdoor and recreational activities to indulge in when the weather is this irresistible.

Kayaking

Tap into your inner voyager and set out for adventure on Suffolk’s lakes and rivers.

Constant’s Wharf Marina

Of all the bodies of water listed, I find Constant’s Wharf Marina to be the most convenient- both in proximity to The Pinner House and ease of access to the kayak launch. This spot is less than a mile from Pinner Street, and has a functional floating dock featuring a kayak launch that easily glides your vessel into the Nansmond River. The Marina is located behind The Hilton Garden Inn and on a pristine public park. Constant’s Wharf has a rich history in Suffolk, being a community developed in the 1720s around John Constant's wharf, dwelling and tobacco warehouse. When city events are in full-swing again (post-Covid,) you can expect Friday Night Concert Series and fireworks on The Fourth of July. After a full day on exploring the Nansmond River, find yourself sun-kissed and content, sitting on The Hilton’s expansive back porch with a view of the river and a cocktail in hand.

The Great Dismal Swamp

The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is the largest intact remnant of a vast habitat that once covered more than one million acres of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. This spot in Suffolk is perfect for biking, hiking, birdwatching and kayaking. Lake Drummond is the larger of only two natural lakes in Virginia; extending 3,142 acres. The swamp holds a rich historical and ecological significance to Virginia. The canal within the swamp was drudgingly carved out of the earth at the labor of slaves in the late 1700s, taking 12 years to complete. It played crucial role in the American civil war, being an important strategic position for Union and Confederate forces. To get the full experience of everything The Great Dismal Swamp has to offer, one would benefit from taking a tour with a guide and local naturalist to point out the history of the area and identify the vast wildlife you are sure to encounter.

Bennett’s Creek Park

There are so many things to enjoy when visiting Bennett’s Creek Park! Take your kayak down to one of their three boat launch and you can access the Nansemond River through Bennett’s Creek. Here, you’ll find 57 acres of park with a tennis courts, skate park, frisbee golf course, inclusive play grounds, and nature trails. One of my favorite things about this park is the city-hosted drive-in movie events! You’ll feel transported in time enjoying an old-fashioned carpool cinema with friends, snacks and treats. In addition to Constant’s Wharf, you can find Suffolk’s TGIF Summer Concert Series at Bennett’s Creek! The night will be full of family fun with food vendors, adult beverages and merchant vendors to shop from.

Lone Star Lakes Park

Lone Star Lakes Park is one of our favorite spots to visit for summer time. It is located in the Chuckatuck area in Northern Suffolk. In addition to boasting 11 fresh water lakes with six convenient boat ramps, you can find a playground, multiple walking trails with look-out spots with the best views of the lake, and picnic tables and grills. One of my favorite things about this park is the various, serene walking trails- some up to 4 miles long. The park it’s is a whopping 1,172 acres, and the lakes vary is size from three to fifty acres!

Kay’s Acres

Ride through the lush wooded trails at Kay’s Acres. You’re sure to find adventure bonding with your newfound four-legged friend, galavanting through Suffolk pastures to cool wooded trails. The establishment of Kay’s Acres was inspired by the founder, Joe’s special relationship with Kay who was diagnosed with Autism and finds a finds a safe space to play, grow and express herself through the healing companionship of horses.

The Taste of Suffolk (Santa Edition)

If someone had told me three years ago that I was going to be making crêpes in a mobile mini bar with a French Santa Claus I am sure I would have laughed in their face. Yet, here we are... and I LOVED IT!

I cannot express the joy that I receive when a community comes together for an event like The Taste of Suffolk. I have such a passion for small business and for the entrepreneur mindset. These kinds of events are exactly what showcases that best! The Taste of Suffolk allows people to step out of their routine of going to a large franchise and to appreciate local businesses and all that they have to offer. This is so important in today's society, especially with how isolated we have become. Going to a local business allows you to get to know your community so much more and to support them better.

Starting a small business is not an easy task to say the least. It requires persistence, self-discipline, vulnerability, and courage. These vendors who came out to The Taste of Suffolk are incredible men and women who are taking risks to make their dream a reality.

I believe that there are still towns like Downtown Suffolk that are ready to fully support small businesses and to help them succeed and develop the community. In order for this to happen it takes an effort on our part. This means breaking out of routine and not only acknowledging small businesses at events such as The Taste of Suffolk, but to remember them on a Friday night when you're going out for drinks with your girlfriends, or on a Sunday morning when you're stopping somewhere to get a pastry. If we support small business then we will support our community and our downtown area will be all the better for it.
